It just isn’t possible to be overly prepared for a move. Whether you’re relocating across town or overseas, organization is your key to survival! There’s no doubt about it… moving is stressful! The following tips provide everything you need to know to get your move underway.

Two Months Prior:

First and foremost get your ducks lined up! If you’re buying a new home, find a home loan company you can trust such as 1300 Home Loan so it can be organized without any headaches (as well as everything else you need to finance your purchase.) Update necessary papers and set up a file exclusively for the move. Start a check list and begin to purge! Clear out everything you don’t need. Sell, store, or donate outdated items. Decide if the move requires additional insurance coverage and specialized packing (in the case of a cross-country or cross-oceanic move).  Research various moving options and collect estimates. Organize school records; if your children will be transferring to a new school, arrange for academic records to be sent to the new district.

Six Weeks Prior:

Decide on the type(s) of moving containers you’ll need and order supplies that aren’t available in local stores. Use up items that you would rather not move, like detergents and frozen foods, and go over your check list. Measure the rooms in your new home; determine if larger items can be moved through doors. Purchase boxes or stackable containers, and hire your movers.

One Month Prior:

If you’ve decided to hire a moving company, confirm all arrangements and obtain written confirmation of all details (cost, dates, and times). Make sure that you are clear on restrictions and insurance details. Start to pack items that you won’t need in the next few weeks. Note items that require extra insurance, number and label containers, and include specifications for room placements. Colour code containers and create a diagram of your new place for the movers. Keep valuables in a separate safe box that you’ll transport yourself!

Register your change of address with the local post office, and send notifications to all businesses, agencies, organizations, and friends who will need to know of your move. Notify utility providers with cut-off and installation dates, and forward required medical records.

Two Weeks Prior:

Let your employer know that you’ll be requiring time off from work, if you haven’t already given notice. Tune up vehicles, and factor in services that might be necessary when relocating to a different climate. Make banking adjustments and clear-out your bank box placing all valuables in your safe box. Contact your movers to confirm all arrangements.

One Week Prior:

Begin packing your suitcases with items that you’ll need within the next week. Fill prescriptions and organize essentials. Defrost your freezer and clean large appliances that you have sold or are taking with you. Go through your records and review all details. Update all contact and emergency information. Prepare payments and gratuities for the moving company, and provide refreshments… particularly when friends and family have been enlisted as part of your moving team. Arrange for small children and pets to be away from home during the actual move.

Moving Day:

Verify all details. Make certain that the moving truck at the curb is the one that you hired. Keep important documents and valuable close at hand. And finally… relax knowing you are on top of this move!
