Prepacking GuidePacking is by far the biggest job to do before you move. Being packed up properly is the best way that can save you the most money and it is also the biggest factor in avoiding unnecessary damage. If you do it right it will make the unpacking a breeze rather than a headache.
Most people don’t understand that for trained professionals, moving the larger items such as fridges and wardrobes are actually quite easy - you see they move them many times a day. The items that take the most amount of time organising are the small things like crockery, cutlery, books, clothes etc. Packing these items into the right size boxes means that there are fewer trips in and out of the house to the truck which reduces the time it takes helping you save money!
Most of the time a box is the best thing to use for packing items away. The larger the box the more items you can fit in it, the more economical it is. However if your box weighs eighty kilograms because you filled it with books, cans of food or your brick collection it is not only uneconomical but it’s unsafe. Choose your box wisely. For heavy items use a small box and for lighter items use a big box. If you are dealing with bulky light items that are unbreakable then we recommend the usage of heavy duty garbage bags for ease of transport and ease of packing.
Do not however be fooled into thinking that all boxes are created equally. Fruit boxes from your local supermarket are for storing fruit not for moving your valuable belongings. You should always use good quality boxes designed for moving house from a reliable provider. These boxes are designed for easy packing and easy stacking into the truck and for the maximum protection of your goods. They are easier, safer and quicker to load!
One last point before we get into the small stuff... don’t underestimate how long it will take to pack everything up. It is a very time consuming exercise that you should aim to have completed at least a day before your move. It is not unreasonable to start packing two weeks out from your move date. Remember, this is all time saved at the end of the day! Or find out more
Boxes & Packaging Material
When packing yourself understanding some of the basics the professionals use will help. Most professional pre-packers go to packing school and they are taught to pack a box so that nothing is broken when the box is dropped from a height of 2.4 metres. Certainly you don’t need to achieve this standard however, if you value your small ‘breakables’, you will want to pack properly.
